The great ape scandal

orang-utan photographed in Borneo

The orang-utan could be extinct within 12 years and human greed is to blame.

Its natural habitat is rapidly disappearing because of the spread of plantations devoted to producing palm oil - a cheap ingredient found in hundreds of products sold in British supermarkets.

As Stanley Johnson discovers in Borneo, our weekly shop in the West is having a catastrophic impact on one of the world's most fascinating species.
