Call for a fairer deal for farmers2 June 2010

New rules to protect farmers and suppliers from the supermarkets have been hotly debated for months.
The talks focussed on proposals for a tough Supermarket Code of Practice.
The proposals were meant to stop the supermarkets from giving farmers a raw deal.
But when plans for a new watchdog were discussed they ran into trouble.
A powerful watchdog
A tough code will only work if it is overseen by a new supermarket watchdog.
The Competition Commission has spent months trying to get the supermarkets to agree to the scheme.
But the supermarkets have refused to sign up to the idea.
What happens now?
It will now be up to Government to put the Competition Commission's proposals into practice.
It's crucial that the Government commits to creating a strong, independent watchdog.
Press for change
Please tell your MP to ask Business Secretary Peter Mandelson to commit to tough rules to protect farmers and suppliers.
And also to sign parliamentary petition Early Day Motion 192 to show their support.
