Beef up support for farmers

Dear Minister

I am pleased that the Government has finally accepted the need for a supermarket watchdog and is consulting on its remit. This comes following the Competition Commission's recommendation for a grocery market Ombudsman almost two years ago. However I am concerned that the proposed Ombudsman risks further delay and weakening. The unfair and abusive buying practices of the supermarkets - resulting from the relentless pursuit of ever-greater profits - are squeezing many farmers and suppliers to the brink of viability. This is disastrous for consumers, workers, the environment and our food security. The Government must introduce a watchdog with real teeth that: * is independent * is proactive in seeking evidence of supermarket abuse * protects anonymity of suppliers * acts on evidence from primary producers - including overseas suppliers - and third parties * has the ability to fine and name and shame supermarkets who breach the code The last Code of Practice failed because it didn't protect farmers and it wasn't enforced. This time we must get it right. After ten years and two inquiries, the conclusions are the same - we need a tough supermarket watchdog for the benefit of farmers and consumers alike.
