Energy and climate

Pack 5
Oct 2000

Our Energy and Climate pack challenged the Government to increase it's target for renewable electricity.

Results of this pack

Our pack on green energy targeted Stephen Byers (then Secretary of State for Trade and Industry) demanding an increase to the Government's 10 per cent renewable energy target. Sources in the DTI said they received well over 2000 postcards.

Due to a combination of events (our campaign, increased public pressure generally and heavy flooding in the autumn), renewables soared up the Government's agenda. We still don't know if they will increase the target but they have conducted a comprehensive energy review. This review, although welcome, has been used by the nuclear industry as an opportunity to try to make a come-back. We shall be using the strength of Campaign Express in the future to ensure this plan fails.

In the pack, we also asked you to put pressure on your electricity supplier to voluntarily supply more than the compulsory 10 per cent renewable. Sadly, we can report no significant shift in policy from these companies. It looks like they are intending to stay within the law and no more.
