Turning the tide14 April 2009
Last year the European Union passed a directive meaning the UK has to get almost 15% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
This June the Government plans to publish a Renewable Energy Strategy setting out its plans for developing renewable energy in the UK.
The UK has some of the best renewable resources in Europe, yet sits at the bottom of the European league table for generating renewable energy.
There is a global shortage of wind turbines and components, keeping prices high for wind farms on and offshore. Our ability to maximise our offshore wind potential is also threatened by a lack of specialised ships to build wind farms at sea and the availability of subsea cables.
We need to establish the skills and manufacturing capacity of our renewable industry to address these shortages, boost UK jobs and our economy.
Winds of change
By changing the way we power the UK and using our natural resources we can tackle climate change and increasing fuel costs. Failure to do so, may mean victories like the Climate Change Law could be meaningless without the systems needed to reduce emissions.
We can do it
Together we can act to ensure the Government sticks to its strategy to boost our renewable energy sector while reducing our reliance on dirty fuels.
Contact your MP and ask them to ensure the Government stay on track to deliver 15% of our energy from clean renewable sources.
