Campaign success in Islington

Last month Islington Council passed a motion to Get Serious about CO2, which commits to:

  • Support Friends of the Earth's Get Serious about CO2 campaign
  • Support the principle of reducing CO2 emissions in Islington year on year towards a goal of cutting emissions by 40% by 2020

The Council also resolved to:

Request that all Executive Members incorporate the 40% goal into all relevant future plans and strategies.

The motion was passed unanimously by the Council thanks to the efforts of Islington Friends of the Earth. The group collected over 400 signed campaign postcards, which were delivered to Councillors in October.

And just before the Council meeting in December, the group emailed all Islington Councillors. They asked them to support the motion, as well as telling them how many people had signed campaign postcards, and how many were from their ward.

Now Islington Friends of the Earth want to see annual targets added to the motion.

And with a report due out in March looking at how to deliver the 40% cuts, the group will be tracking developments closely.
