The yacht gets a name

Jonathan Crinion's state-of-the-art yacht - named Friends of the Earth - has launched in Cape Town, South Africa.

The yacht is a showcase for some of the technological solutions to climate change:

  • Solar powered electrics
All of the yacht's electrical equipment will be powered by the sun.
  • No fridge
Fresh food will be grown on board instead. A nutritionist has designed Jonathan's diet.
  • Solar heated shower
A simple black bag filled with water and a hot sunny day will heat the shower.
  • Energy efficient fittings
Everything from the stove to navigation lights has been selected to maximise energy savings.

I'm thrilled to be sailing in support of The Big Ask, Friends of the Earth's climate campaign.

Jonathan Crinion, Skipper
