Climate hits the headlines... again!

Climate change was top of the news agenda again last week. While Blair cosied up to Bush two men who would be king spoke of the need to make urgent cuts.

Prince Charles said on the eve of his U.S visit:

We should be treating the whole issue of climate change and global warming with a far greater degree of priority than is happening now.

He went on to press Bush on the issue at a White House dinner, pointing out:

So many people throughout the world look to the United States for a lead on the most crucial issues that face our planet and indeed the lives of our grandchildren.

While Charles challenged Bush, Blair was preaching the Washington line. In a speech on climate he suggested "informal mechanisms" would be preferable to binding targets to reduce pollution.

Meanwhile David Cameron all but endorsed the Big Ask campaign when he outlined his ideas on climate change. Cameron wants a law to cut the amounts of carbon dioxide being released year on year.

It's the easiest thing in the world to set the target for 2010 and get a great headline when you do so, the much more difficult thing is the year-on-year progress towards it and I think that's what Friends of the Earth are talking about.
