Giant flag for Europe's energy future

EU energy future flag

Friends of the Earth campaigners from across Europe were in Brussels last week to demand a clean safe energy future.

Spring Summit

March to the Council
building

At the Spring Summit in Brussels on March 8/9, European Heads of State met to discuss Europe's energy.

On the agenda were targets for

  • Energy efficiency
  • Renewable energy
  • Greenhouse gas emissions

Decisions made at this meeting could lock Europe into decades of dirty power or a cleaner brighter future.

Friends of the Earth action

Friends of the Earth Europe organised an action outside the Council building to show the need to tackle climate change.

300 activists from 15 Friends of the Earth Europe groups travelled from central, eastern, southern and northern Europe to participate in the action.

They created a 12m high European flag with positive and negative energy symbols and sent their message to the heart of the European government.

Representatives from the German delegation delivered a star signed by everyone present on the action to the Council meeting.

As a result of the meeting, EU Leaders agreed to:

  • Cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020
  • Get 20% of energy from renewable sources by 2020
