An existing offshore windfarm (Utgrunden, Sweden)
The London Array offshore windfarm in the Thames Estuary has finally been given the go ahead.
Friends of the Earth is delighted that the scheme has been approved. It is a big step towards meeting the UK's renewable energy targets.
In March this year, Tony Blair and other EU leaders signed a landmark agreement to source 20% of Europe's total energy from renewables by 2020.
The London Array project will help the UK meet this target - by providing 1% of the country's electricity demand. We need more large scale renewable energy projects like this to help us tackle climate change.
London Array is good for the planet and good news for East Kent - the project will bring new jobs, new opportunities for regeneration and clean renewable power for the whole of the nation.
