Hydropower in Stockport needs your support
15 April 2010

Two new hydro power schemes are planned for the River Goyt in Stockport.

If they go ahead, they will be Greater Manchester's first community-funded hydro electric schemes.

The two plants would have an estimated lifespan of 40 years, and would be situated at Otterspool weir and Stringer weir.

Community involvement

Did you know?

These two schemes could power around 120 homes and save around 232 tonnes of CO2 per year.

The scheme was developed by Water Power Enterprises.

They were also behind the successful Torrs Hydro at New Mills in the Peak District, which was the UK's first community-funded hydro scheme.

Future profits from the New Mills scheme will fund local environmental projects.

Over 100 local people are shareholders in Torrs Hydro and they decide where this money goes.
