All Major Supermarkets turn Against GM Foods

Tesco has finally given in to consumer pressure and has said that it will try to remove genetically modified (GM) ingredients from all its own-brand products. This means that all major supermarkets are now shunning GM ingredients - a major victory for shoppers and for Friends of the Earth.

Iceland, the first major food retailer to declare a GM-free policy for its own brand products last year, announced increased profits this spring. Unilever, Nestle and Cadburys have all followed suit and are now phasing out GM ingredients. Unilever, the focus of a campaign by Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace, has claimed that sales of its Beanfeast product, which includes GM soya, had fallen by 50 per cent.
