Flying less

You shouldn't feel guilty about visiting your relatives in Australia. But we also need to look at alternatives for less special trips.

What's wrong with air travel?

The Government is planning a massive growth in air travel - increasing problems like:

  • Noise for people living nearby.
  • More road congestion near airports.
  • Damage to the countryside as airports expand.

Climate change

The biggest problem with air travel is climate change.

In the UK, it is one of the fastest growing sources of climate changing gases.

If air travel grows at current rate it'll become the biggest source of carbon dioxide pollution by 2040.

Tax breaks

This expansion is only possible because airports and airlines don't pay the same taxes as other forms of transport.

Did you know?

Tax breaks mean every UK tax payer effectively pays over £300 per year to the aviation industry - whether you fly or not.

They pay no tax on their fuel and no VAT on many of their operations.

Solutions

The growth in air travel isn't inevitable. There are cleaner, greener ways to travel.

Four fifths of all UK trips abroad are within Europe. Many of these destinations could be reached by train.

Friends of the Earth says:

  • Airlines and airports should pay for the damage they cause.

  • Government needs to invest in the alternatives to flying.

  • It needs to be easier for us to use the alternatives.
