Driving better

We're not saying you should give up your car. But a lot can be done to make it greener.

The car problem

There's too much traffic on Britain's roads. This contributes to:

  • Congestion
  • Noise and air pollution
  • Climate change

Driving less can help. But so can driving more fuel efficient cars. The Government can help tackle the problem.

Broken promises

In the 1990s the car manufacturers agreed goals to cut their climate changing gases.

Some progress has been made. But they are still going to miss their targets.

New technology

Technology could help meet these targets. Hybrid cars use part-petrol and part-electric driven motors which means they emit less carbon dioxide.

Making cars more fuel-efficient not only cuts carbon dioxide emissions - it also saves you money.

Did you know?

Toyota Prius drivers spend over £2000 less per year on petrol than Land Cruiser Amazon owners.

Tax incentives

Government needs to use:

  • Road tax
  • Fuel duty
  • Grants

to encourage people to drive greener cars.

Friends of the Earth says:

  • Cars are part of our future. We need to use them less and better.

  • By law, all new cars should be more efficient and less polluting.

  • We need incentives to buy greener cars.

Road transport is not the only cause of transport related climate change. Air travel is the fastest growing source of climate pollution.
