Department for Transport failing on climate change

blank image

Cover of "Driving Up Co2 emissions" reportThe Department for Transport (DfT) is failing on climate change.

Emissions will continue to rise without a radical change of approach according to a new report from Friends of the Earth and environmental groups.

The report (PDF 905K), written by respected consultants Steer Davies Gleave, concludes that:

  • DfT does not know the full impact of its policies on climate change. For example, they have no climate impact figures for most of their planned major road schemes.
  • Many of the policies that DfT is relying on to cut emissions are off-target and will not deliver the reductions that the Government hopes.

Friends of the Earth believes that DfT is losing the battle to cut emissions. Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander must make tackling climate change his top priority.
