Ruddock sponsors Recycling Bill

Joan Ruddock MPThe Labour MP for Lewisham Deptford, Joan Ruddock, will introduce the Doorstep Recycling Bill early next year. The move follows a Private Members ballot - where 20 lucky MPs get to choose a bill to present to Parliament.

If the Bill becomes law it will ensure that every household in England and Wales is supplied with a doorstep recycling service.

The UK has one of the worst recycling records in Europe. We only recycle about 11 per cent of our waste while some of our European neighbours such as Austria recycle more than half of theirs.

People in my constituency and elsewhere want to recycle and do their bit for the environment .

By ensuring that every household has a doorstep recycling service the Doorstep Recycling Bill will make recycling as easy as putting out the rubbish.

Another MP in the ballot has also told Friends of the Earth he would have adopted the Bill. Brian White, the Labour MP for Milton Keynes NE said:

I have long advocated doorstep recycling and as a councillor helped to introduce the first such scheme in Milton Keynes some years back.

What's more, the sheer volume of Friends of the Earth supporters and others who pressed me to take up the Bill is a clear demonstration of how popular it is.

I wish Joan Ruddock the very best of luck, and will certainly give all the support I can to get the Bill into law.

Brian White MP

The majority of MPs have backed doorstep recycling by signing parliamentary petitions (Early Day Motions) in support.

The adoption of the Doorstep Recycling Bill by Joan Ruddock is a very important first step - but we'll need your help over the next year to make sure it becomes law.
