Wind power latest poll14 October 2002
Windfarms are an important part of a renewable energy future for Wales.
Friends of the Earth Cymru asked Market Research Wales to find out how people in Wales felt about windfarms.
71% of people support a doubling of the 360 wind turbines currently on land in Wales.
Friends of the Earth Cymru proposes a doubling of windfarms on land by 2010 to help reduce emissions of climate changing gases and create jobs for Wales.
87% of people said they would prefer to see 600 offshore wind turbines than one nuclear power station.
600 turbines, at least four miles offshore would produce roughly the same amount of energy as one new nuclear power station.
The UK Government is looking to nuclear power to meet its commitments to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases which cause climate change. We don't agree - renewable energy is the safest and cleanest way to combat climate change.
Why do the results matter?
Renewable energy in Wales is being stalled because of determined opposition to the construction of windfarms.
If too many renewable energy schemes are blocked then we will be facing new construction of expensive and dangerous nuclear power stations.
Wind power is just one of the types of renewable energy Friends of the Earth Cymru supports for Wales. We also need to use much less electricity than we do at the moment. But energy efficiency and other renewable technologies will not achieve all the reductions in greenhouse gases we need to make.
That is why Friends of the Earth Cymru is campaigning for the National Assembly for Wales to set high targets for electricity production from renewables in Wales.
