Stonehenge road scheme scrapped

The Government has scrapped the planned dualling of the A303 trunk road through the Stonehenge World Heritage Site.

The scheme would have included a 2 km tunnel but much of the road widening would have been above ground.

The scheme has effectively been sunk by the high cost of the tunnel.

The £1 billion should be spent on sustainable transport projects for the South West such as an upgrade of the Exeter to Waterloo railway line.
