Belfast says No to incinerator30 June 2009
After a false start, Belfast City Council finally voted against a proposed waste incinerator on 22 June.
Belfast City Council is one of 11 councils in the ARC21 waste umbrella group. ARC21's waste management plan includes incineration but no facility has been developed yet.
Friends of the Earth is opposed to incineration because
- it destroys a valuable resource that will need to be replaced
- it is a net user of energy
- it could undermine recycling
- it could lock Northern Ireland into producing ever more waste to feed the incinerator
The decision to reject incineration gives the council space to develop a sustainable waste strategy.
