18 September 1996
"The Government shows further signs of falling into line with the growing tide
of public and professional opinion. We welcome the Government's acceptance
of the report's strategic imperatives and main policy objectives.
We particularly welcome the Government leaving open the possibility of targets for reducing traffic levels.
However we are very disappointed with some elements of the Government's response, particularly their rejection of complete protection for Britain's key wildlife sites and their abdication of responsibility for setting targets for reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and acid precipitation. These targets would be in line with the precautionary principle which the response says the Government endorses.
We will continue to press both the Government and the opposition to shape national
transport policy in keeping with the specific recommendations of the Round
Table."
