Diners still concerned about GM food

16 September 2000

FOE Welcomes FSA Survey

Friends of the Earth welcomed a new survey on restaurant labels by the Food Standards Agency, published today. The survey shows that the presence of GM ingredients is one of the key items of interest to people eating out. Compulsory labelling of GM ingredients in restaurant dishes was introduced almost one year ago (19 September 1999).

Adrian Bebb, Real Food Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said:

“The public are still concerned about GM food and want proper labelling to help them avoid it. Rather than scrapping this regulation, as some people want, it should be strengthened. Trading Standards Officers must be given more resources to ensure that the rules are not being broken and that those who don't want to eat GM food are not being hood-winked.”
