Surrey says yes to monster incinerator

7 December 2001

...but turns down two more applications

Surrey County Council today rejected plans for a massive incinerator at Guildford. Yesterdaythe council rejected proposals for an incinerator at Redhill, but gave permission for one to bebuilt at Clockhouse Brickworks near Capel. County Councillors narrowly voted (8-6) to approvethe Capel Incinerator last night.

Mike Childs, Waste Campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said:

"Whilst we are delighted that Surrey County Council has turned down plans for incinerators at Guildford and Redhill, we are bitterly disappointed about its decision toallow one to be be built near Capel."

"Surrey County Council should be investing in doorstep recycling schemes rather than monster incinerators that burn precious resources and threaten the health of local residents. We now call on Secretary of State Stephen Byers to intervene and stop this incinerator from going ahead."
