Friends of the Earth has welcomed today's acknowledgement from business leaders of the "significant" role that businesses must play in tackling climate change [1]. But the environmental campaign group called on the CBI to back new legislation to make the Government legally responsible for tackling climate change.
CBI President John Sunderland said today that "Business has a significant role to play in meeting future climate changes and is prepared to engage fully in this process but needs equally engaged, committed and, above all, practical Government policy frameworks"
Friends of the Earth want the CBI to back a new law making the Government legally responsible for cutting emissions by three per cent every year. The Climate Bill would make the Government set out a clear policy framework for cutting emissions by 60 per cent by 2050 (based on 1990 levels), including an annual carbon budget [2].
Friends of the Earth Climate Campaigner, Martyn Williams said:
"We are delighted that the CBI recognises the significant role that business must pay in cutting carbon dioxide emissions. It should now back calls for new legislation to make the Government legally responsible for introducing a `climate budget' and cutting UK emissions by three per cent every year. This would provide the clear policy framework that business wants. Global warming threatens us all. We must work together to beat it."
