Hard shoulder running: Friends of the Earth Comment

Responding to a Government announcement today (25 Oct) that a scheme which allows motorists to use the hard shoulder during peak periods is to be extended to other stretches of motorway in the West Midlands and could be used across the country, Friends of the Earth Senior Transport Campaigner Tony Bosworth said:

"Extending hard shoulder running is motorway widening by stealth and won't solve our traffic problems. Wider motorways will simply encourage more drivers and cause an increase in carbon dioxide emissions. The Government's feasibility study should look at trialing reduced speed limits without widening in some places to help cut emissions.

Government transport policy needs an urgent change of direction. It should cut spending on road building and invest instead in schemes that cut emissions from transport and help tackle climate change. A strong climate change law will ensure all government departments play their part in reducing carbon dioxide emissions every year."
