Responding to the news that the Government has struck a deal with energy companies to help households with fuel bills, Phil Michaels, Head of Legal at Friends of the Earth said:
"The Government's tactic of asking companies to inject a little money here and there towards household fuel bills is short-sighted - even John Hutton admits that it will only help a fraction of vulnerable households out of fuel poverty.
"What is needed is a far more comprehensive programme of energy efficiency, to end suffering from fuel poverty and fight climate change by cutting carbon emissions from homes.
"This week Friends of the Earth joined forces with Help the Aged to take the Government to court, to ensure it is held to its legal obligation to eradicate fuel poverty for vulnerable households by 2010 and for all households by 2016."
