New business flights set to increase emissions

Commenting on British Airways starting a new, twice-daily, 32-seater business flight from London City Airport to New York tomorrow [Tuesday, 29 September 2009], Friends of the Earth's aviation campaigner Richard Dyer said:

"Aviation causes harmful emissions that contribute to climate change - we should be curbing the growth in flying, not laying on new flights.

"Worse still, the luxurious and spacious layout on these planes will mean each passenger is responsible for around three times the emissions from regular flights.

"Airlines have a vital role to play in tackling climate change and must slash their emissions without buying offsets to compensate for their negative impact on the environment.

"The Government must also scrap plans to expand Britain's airports - including London City Airport - and do more to promote teleconferencing as a low-carbon means of conducting business across the Atlantic Ocean."
