Pay as you go motorway lanes will increase traffic

4 March 2008

Transport policy must go in new direction

Commenting on Ruth Kelly's plans for extra motorway lanes, Friends of the Earth Transport Campaigner, Tony Bosworth, said:

“Ruth Kelly's plans for extra motorway lanes are not the answer to Britain's transport problems. The additional capacity will encourage more traffic, which may lead to more climate-changing pollution. And allowing drivers to pay to use one lane will only provide a choice for those who can afford it. Real choice and real solutions to congestion and transport's contribution to climate change can be achieved by improving alternatives to car use and reducing the need to travel. National road-pricing has a role to play, but it must be aimed at tackling climate change. It's time that UK transport policy went in a different direction.”
