Proposed tax hike for gas-guzzlers welcomed

18 October 2003

Friends of the Earth has welcomed reports that the Government is considering plans to make drivers of highly polluting cars pay more road tax.

Friends of the Earth's Transport Campaigner, Roger Higman, said:

"Climate change is one of the biggest environmental threats the world faces. We welcome news that the Government is drawing up plans to make motorists pay more tax for driving gas-guzzling vehicles. But if it is to work, the drivers of the biggest polluters, which contribute most to global warming, must be hit hard in the wallet, with the extra revenue invested in alternatives to the car."
